7 Mshawish / 13 The Fugue / 11 Dank / 10 Vercingetorix
For me this was the toughest race on the world cup night card to handicap. So many quality horses in this field that were live with a legit shot, but the cream really came to the top when all was said and done. Just A Way much the best, followed by the formerly unbeaten Vecingetorix with a quality run in 2nd, Dank coming from a mile out it to get up for 3rd, and Mshawish in 4th who may not have been considered by many to be the level of many of the horses in the field, but he's really thrived on turf course at Meydan and has had an outstanding carnival in his own right.
10 Dank, 2 just a way,4 the fuge,11 vercingetorix
Horses that have already won on the Dubai turf course have the edge. Mshawish, Vercingetorix and Tasaday. I also like Just A Way from Japan.

It surprised me a little to see The Fugue end up in this race instead of the Dubai World Cup given the Duty Free was never really mentioned at any time as a likely target for her in Dubai. The Sheema Classic had always been said to be the back-up plan for The Fugue if she didn't go in the Dubai World Cup. That being said, trainer John Gosden is a sly old fox and one of the best trainers not only in Europe but in the sport itself. I suspect he may be on to something here dropping The Fugue back down in trip to 1800 meters after back to back very tough international starts at 12f in both the G1 Breeders Cup Turf and G1 Hong Kong Vase. Certainly she ran well enough to finish 2nd in both of those races, but arguably her most impressive run of the season in 2013 came at 10f/2000 meters when she beat Al Kazeem & Trading Leather to win the G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. 1800 meters might be just a shade shorter than ideal for her, but she's always had a very good turn of foot and certainly can't be just summarily dismissed in the Duty Free, IMO.

  • Northport · I agree Paul, this is one of their strongest contingents that they have sent out in recent memory. I would love to see Logotype get back to the form he had a year ago · 3232 days ago
  • paul.nathan.946 · that's the one i'm probably going to go with can't really split him and just a way, although in the sheema im with denim and ruby i think shes got more improvement in her and will probably improve past gentildonna just worried about the jap jockey though they have some strange way of riding horses over there lol · 3232 days ago
Dank all the way!
  • ILuvTurfRacing · Dank's a classy filly for sure. I've always been a really big fan of hers and I think she'll run well at Meydan. That being said, she's arguably up against the stiffest company of her career to date with the likes of the still unbeaten Vercingetorix, Japanese raiders Just A Way & Tokei Halo, and other classy fillies like The Fugue & Tasaday all lining up for the Dubai Duty Free. I wish her well, though. Hope Dank runs a big race. · 3232 days ago
