Mike became interested in horses through his father’s ownership of Quarter Horses. He followed the career of major stakes winner Vigors and became interested in Thoroughbreds. At age 14, walked hots and mucked stalls for trainer Clay Brinson. At 15, spent the summer at Del Mar with Brinson, living in a motor home across the street from the track. Worked for two years as a groom for trainer Henry Moreno. He then worked for trainer Richard Mandella for 5-1/2 years as stable foreman and assistant trainer. Had the chance to work with stakes winners Phone Trick, Captain Vigors, Winter Treasure and Paisano Pete. He took out his trainer’s license in 1989, and saddled his first career winner, Bidadip, on New Year’s Day, 1990, at Santa Anita. He currently maintains a stable of approximately 25-30 horses, primarily at Santa Anita Park, with an auxiliary barn at Hollywood Park. His first stakes winner was Native Boundary. First graded stakes winner was Dancing Rhythm, winner of the 1998 Senorita Stakes (G3) at Hollywood Park. Other major winners include graded winners Fencelineneighbor, Shuffling Kid and September Secret plus stakes winners Geronimo, Cahill Connection, Candy Factory, Sensational Score, Bedlam Bertie and Sandra’s Rose. Saddled impressive 2-year-old maiden winner Champions Gate to finish second in the I’m Smokin S. during the 2011 Del Mar season. Gained national attention in 2004 when he saddled Southern Image to win the Malibu Stakes (G1) on opening day of the 2003-04 Santa Anita meet, then the 2004 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Sunshine Millions Classic, and the Pimlico Special (G1). He won the $900,000 Sunland Derby in 2009 with Kelly Leak, the race in which eventual Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird finished fourth. Mike bred and continues to train graded stakes winner and fan favorite, Caracortado, and co-owns him with longtime clients Don and Audrey Blahut. He wanted to name him Scarface because the gelding first arrived at Machowsky’s barn with a healing six-inch cut on his nose. When The Jockey Club wouldn’t allow Scarface because of copyright issues with the movie, they named him Caracortado, which is scarface in Spanish.
