UofL Equine Program

The UofL Equine Industry Program, with the support of Horse Racing Nation, is proud to present a three-part fall speaker series that focuses on current issues in the horse racing industry.

This free event series will bring experts to a LIVE, fun and engaging platform to educate our students, alumni, industry participants and the general public.

All events are from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. ET on Horse Racing Nation's Facebook Page via Facebook Live.

SEPT. 15
Examining Horse Racing’s ‘Super Card’ Trend

Most every racetrack combines their biggest stakes into "Super Card" days in an effort to appeal to fans and stand out in the simulcast marketplace. Does this take away too much from the purse account and diminish excitement of the rest of the meet?

The panel will be moderated by Mark Midland, co-founder & CEO of Horse Racing Nation.

How Racing Can Grow Through Diversity and Inclusion

An in-depth look at how racing can grow through embracing diversity and inclusion. Panelists will explore advancements being made at the racetrack, in horse ownership and through youth education.

NOV. 9

    The series concludes with an entertaining evening with Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale. Owner of the Gallery Furniture retail chain, McIngvale is a Houston businessman and philanthropist known for his work ethic and continuous innovation. He also owns and races Thoroughbreds, including the 2015 Sprint Champion, “Runhappy.” He is known in racing circles for his strong opinions on the sport, horses running medication-free and supporting the ecosystem of horse racing by placing wagers at the racetrack instead of advance-deposit wagering accounts.

This year's series is the 3rd annual University of Louisville Equine Program Speaker Series.

The 2020 Fall Speaker Series included:

- Racing's Now-Reality: Is It Sustainable?, a panel including Chris Kotulak - CEO, Fonner Park, Andrew Offerman - VP Racing Operations, Canterbury Park, Terry Finley - Founder, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Jack Jeziorski - EVP, Monarch Content Management (subsidiary of the Stronach Group). Moderated by Mike Penna of Horse Racing Radio network. 

- Waiting for the Gavel to Fall: Horse Sales Go High-Tech, featuring Boyd Browning - President/CEO, Fasig-Tipton, Jack Carlino - EIP alum '16 and co-founder, Wanamaker's, Duncan Taylor - Taylor Made Sales Agency, David Ingordo - Ingordo Bloodstock Services. Hosted by Megan Devine, EIP alum '14, TV Personality and Founder/CEO VidHorse.

- An Evening with Hall of Famer Pat Day, hosted by U of L's Sean Beirne 

2019 Fall Speaker Series:

The Business of Racetrack Surfaces, a panel including Mick Peterson, director of Agriculture Equine Programs at the University of Kentucky and an expert on the engineering of track surfaces; Jamie Richardson, track superintendent at Churchill Downs; and Chip Bach, general manager of Turfway Park.

Sports Betting and Horse Racing, featuring panelists Rep. Adam Koenig (R-69), who introduced a bill in Kentucky, Bill Knauf, VP of business operations at Monmouth Park, and John Walsh, assistant general manager at Hawthorne Race Course. 

An evening with Tom Durkin, featuring legendary racetrack announcer Tom Durkin.
