Throughout its history the Santa Anita Handicap has repeatedly attracted a stellar field of competitors. But few renewals were as star studded as the very first running in 1935. The initial Big Cap was designed by the legendary Doc Strub as a farewell to the turf for the popular champion, Equipoise. By winning the Santa Anita Handicap, Ekky, as he was known to his numerous fans, would finally surpass Sun Beau as the world's leading money winner. He would tote top weight of 130 against 19 other runners, including arch rivals: Twenty Grand--Derby and Belmont winner and future HOF inductee and Mate--the Preakness winner. In addition, the field would include top handicappers: Head Play--a son of a full brother to MOW, winner of the Preakness but who was most known for being part of the slashing finish of the 1933 KD with Broker's Tip; Time Supply--a winner of the 1934 Narragansett Special and a holder of track records of 6f, 9f and 1 1/16 at three different tracks; Good Goods-- 3rd in the 1934 Belmont Stakes and winner of the Havre De Grace Handicap and future sire of Alsab; Faireno--the 1932 three yr old champion and Belmont Stakes, Dwyer and Lawrence Realization winner; Ladysman--champion 2 yr old of 1932, winner of the Suburban and 2nd in the Preakness and 4th in the KD; Gusto--winner of the Arlington Classic, American Derby and JCGC; Top Row--rags to riches winner of the Narragansett Special over Discovery and the future 1936 Big Cap winner; Riskulus--winner of the Agua Caliente Derby; nice fillies: Fleam--winner of the Acorn and 2nd in the Whitney; High Glee--Matron winner. Rounding out the field were other stakes winners, including Sarada, Sweeping Light, Precursor, Mad Frump,Ted Clark and former steeplechaser, Azucar. The inaugural running of the Santa Anita Handicap won by the 7 yr old ex-steeplechaser, Azucar would prove to be the final meeting of the famous triumvirate. This last race would end on a rather bittersweet note as Equipoise finished a well beaten 7th, Twenty Grand 10th and Mate 6th. Equipoise was retired after the Big Cap as he had aggravated an old tendon injury during the race. He would prove to be an excellent sire before his premature death at age ten. Afterwards Twenty Grand would be shipped to England to compete where he attained only modest results. He was returned to America and to Greentree Farm where he lived out his days as a member of what was humorously known as the Gas House Gang: comprised of steeplechasers Easter Hero, Jolly Roger and nice handicapper, Cherry Pie. Twenty Grand had previously proven sterile at stud. Mate would also be retired shortly after the Santa Anita Handicap. From a limited number of progeny, he would sire the great steeplechaser and HOF member, Elkridge. And the Santa Anita Handicap would become one of the most important races for older horses in North America and continue to this day to attract the top champions to California.

  • buckpasser · TV. I am not saying Pollard's blindness didn't affect the outcome of the race, but I don't think it was the only reason Seabiscuit lost. · 3194 days ago
  • travel_vic · agreed. NO NE thing wins or loses reaces. · 3194 days ago
2014 to be HOTY WILL TAKE CHARGE..the best bet..
I may be the only one, but i feel Hear the Ghost has a chance in this race. Good PP for him, his stomach ulcers have gotten better, and I've wanted to see him at a longer distance ever since he got unfortunately injured.

  • shackleford · #3-6,#8 are simply fillers. It's a three horse race. · 3195 days ago
  • Northport · I will blindly follow any Ghostzapper progeny (coughjudythebeautycough), would love to see him run big in the big cap. I haven't ever really thought of him as a 1 1/4 horse but would not mind at all if I am proved wrong · 3195 days ago

  • tmallios1 · That is why GARY IS GARY. Almost 3 horses passed him in the stretch and he never quit riding. The boy still has it. · 3239 days ago
  • goblin · Oh, absolutely, no surprise to me! BTW, Tom, if able, have Lisa look at the dosage for the other Pletcher/Tabor colt Gary rode on Saturday--Palace Gate. His damsire is the original Tabor/Stevens connection, Thunder Gulch. His numbers are 3-1-23-0-1, with a DI of 1.24. · 3239 days ago awesome video of the winners circle ...a must watch!!!
