Monday's 9th race (5:09pm CT) from Oaklawn Park is the Grade III Southwest Stakes for 3-year-olds traveling a mile and a sixteenth on the main track.

#5 Kendall's Boy (12-1) flashed talent right out of the box with a 2nd to Havana, followed by an easy maiden win under the Twin Spires. He tried a route of ground and flopped in the G1 Breeders' Futurity but never appeared comfortable on synthetic footing that day. He returned with a sharp 6f win at Fair Grounds Jan. 11 and gets another crack at graded routers. Amoss excels with shippers and with 2nd off the shelf runners. Strong pace player will hang in there as long as he can.

#3 Coastline (8-1) exits a solid 3rd from post 10 off a layoff in the local Smarty Jones. The tactical type drew better today and can improve.

#4 Louies Flower (12-1) owns improving numbers and can sit and pounce. The Springboard Mile winner has scored twice off a layoff.

#7 Strong Mandate (2-1) was inconsistent last year but looks like the class of the field with a big win in the G1 Hopeful and a qualify 3rd from post 13 in the G1 BC Juvenile. The Lukas trainee has a promising route pedigree and should make his presence felt throughout. He might need the race and will probably be bet down off the 2-1 morning line. Rosario, fresh off two stakes wins at Santa Anita, gets a return call.

#2 Tapiture (3-1) graduated in a suspect renewal of the G2 Ky Jockey Club Stakes and was a close 3rd in another weak Churchill stakes race, the G3 Iroquois. He may have matured from 2 to 3 but I wll try to beat him in this spot.

The Plays:

.50 cent Trifecta 3-5/3-4-5-7/ALL ($27)

2/7/8/3 finish don't often get all of them but QUOTE: contenders before scratches:2 Tapiture 8 Ride On Curlin 7 Strong Mandate 3 Coastline 1 Tanzanite Cat and the 1 ran behind the 3. Fellow had lots of horse on the rail the whole trip and widened easily. Some actually called in BEFORE THE RACE and not afterward with the fibbers
Had the top 4 in the super but only used Tapiture underneath. I wasn't a believer. Have to reevaluate this one.
2/7/8/3 finish
19/1 got him, there off
19/1 got him, there off
I like this race and this horse. Contenders before scratches: #4, 5, 6, 8. Race will be won on the front end. And that's the way this horse runs at a big price! Bet #5 to win. Exactas: 5/4, 6, 8, 2 and reverse. Good luck with a good pick Jarrod!!
contenders before scratches:2 Tapiture 8 Ride On Curlin 7 Strong Mandate 3 Coastline 1 Tanzanite Cat Big group out front 1 4 5 6 so who has the early position? Don't know as it predicts to be a cavalry charge.
