Mr O’Farrell, we all know about the need to hold horses up occasionally, but here is a simple maths lesson: If, for example, you give the field 10 lengths at the start, how many lengths stronger does your horse need to be to win the race? Answer: A minimum of 10 lengths, so any perceived benefit of holding a horse up must outweigh the number of lengths lost. Today, you gradually caught up with the field but when Millers Reef made a move on the bend, you did nothing – you fool!
