It has been more than four months since Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun was promoted from second to first in the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. Because of a sore right hind foot, that was the last time he had a timed performance of any kind. Until Sunday.

The 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief turned in an easy, three-furlong breeze at Churchill Downs, clocked at 38.8 seconds on the fast main track. It was his first timed workout since July 10.

"Breezed fine," trainer Brad Cox said in a text message to Horse Racing Nation. "Plan is to have a big 2022." Cox said he did not have a specific race targeted for a comeback. Racing manager Garrett O'Rourke of Juddmonte, the breeder-owner of Mandaloun, told the Daily Racing Form last summer that the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) on Feb. 26 would be a goal.
