Winx or Enable? Jockey Doyle starts the debate

Supporters of Winx have anticipated a trip overseas for the two-time Australian champion. Now, the thought of a Royal Ascot showdown with Enable has started the debate: Which horse would win should they match up?

The only jockey who competed against both thinks he knows the answer.

“Winx is doing a fantastic job down there but, to be fair, she can only beat what she’s up against,” James Doyle said in an interview with as he sided with Enable, the recent winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Not to be outdone, Winx registered her 21st straight victory the next weekend and will go for another Oct. 28 in the Group I Cox Plate, perhaps the mare’s final race in Australia before beginning an international tour. Should 6-year-old Winx travel to Europe, she will face new — and maybe tougher — competition, with rising star Enable among the bunch.

Doyle rode Hartnell to a pair of runner-up efforts against Winx in Australia.

“Hartnell's a Group 3 winner here - he won the Queen's Vase [at Royal Ascot] - and he's the second-best horse out there at the moment. There's no doubt he has improved for going Down Under,” Doyle told

“...I just question what the ability of the horses she's beaten compared to Enable. Enable's beaten all our top-flight mile-and-a-quarter and mile-and-a-half horses.”

Despite his preference for Enable, Doyle gave Winx credit, believing she can contend in Europe.

“She's a pretty remarkable racehorse to be fair," he said. "She has all the attributes of a top-class performer and she seems to be able to win no matter what the conditions are."
