The Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club moved a step closer to hosting the richest race in the Caribbean after the Official Barrier Draw for the $150,000 Caribbean Star Limited Pitons Cup, run at about a mile, was held Saturday.

The feature's bringing together racing leaders from across North America, the Caribbean and Australasia including WinStar Farm; Taylor Made Farm; Todd Pletcher; Elite Sales & Sol Kumin’s Madaket Stables; Fasig-Tipton Sales & Bluewater Sales; Rockingham Ranch & David Bernsen, LLC; and Three Diamonds Farm & Queen LilyStable.

“The DSH Caribbean Star Limited Pitons Cup is bringing the world to Saint Lucia and in turn, promoting Saint Lucia to the world,” said Eden Harrington, Executive Director of the Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club.

“Flights to Saint Lucia are fully booked. Hotels island wide are full or filling up. The impact is real and significant. In a few days time, international guests and media will be descending on Saint Lucia to take in all that this nation has to offer. We intend for them to return as messengers promoting the virtues of Saint Lucians and Saint Lucia.

“Importantly, we are continuing to promote local participation and we are reserving one horse for the $20,000 Keeneland National Day Sprint and one horse for the $40,000 UK Tote Winston Trim Memorial Trophy for local horsemen and local owners to be ‘owners for the day.’ Be an owner for a day among a group of 10 for as little as $1,000 each.”

Saturday's platform was also used by the Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club to announce its position as an avid promoter of drug free racing.

“The overriding priority of Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club is the welfare of equine athletes. We have developed veterinary rules and regulations in line with international recommendations to ensure the highest level of safety and welfare of all participants,” said the club’s official veterinarian, Dr. Belinda Rose.

“The Royal Saint Lucia Turf Club is committed to clean racing and has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to performance enhancing medications and substances. It has implemented medication thresholds in accordance with the International Federation of Horseracing Authority (IFHA) guidelines on the use of medications such as bisphosphonates and cobalt. Additionally, Saint Lucia promotes racing Lasix free and is committed to clean and transparent racing.”
