Wicked Whisper, viewed as one of the top 2-year-old fillies to debut during the Saratoga meet, solidified herself as one of the best in her crop to run just about anywhere this season when taking them all the way to win Sunday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette Stakes.

The Steve Asmussen-trained daughter of Liam’s Map didn’t quite go gate to wire, as longshot Miss Marissa broke on top. But once rushed to the front by jockey Joel Rosario, Wicked Whisper cruised in the automatic qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Campaigned by Asmussen’s longtime clients, Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, Wicked Whisper clicked off fractions of 22.91 seconds for the quarter mile, 46.49 to the half and 1:11.12 for 3/4.

Frank’s Rockette gave chase in the stretch, but Rosario asked a bit more from Wicked Whisper, a $500,000 yearling purchase who finished up 2 1/2-lengths in front. Final time was 1:35.92.

Slam Dunk ran third in the field of seven.

"She relaxed good and was able to have a little extra in the last part," Rosario said. "There was a lot of speed. I was going to break and see; if someone went, maybe [I'd] lay second or third. She had nice cruising speed right away and I just decided to go on with her.

"Every time I asked her, she was there for me. It was her first time going a mile, so you just want something for the last part. She responded and just kept going. The more I asked, the more she was going. She looks like she's real spirited and looking around and enjoying herself."

The Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies will mark Wicked Whisper’s first try around two turns with her debut victory measuring six furlongs back on Aug. 25.

"She did everything perfectly," said Toby Sheets, assistant trainer for Asmussen. "You could see by her ears she was just waiting and Joel [Rosario] just showed her the crop once and she ran great. She's a very nice and classy horse. She does everything correct."

Wicked Whisper also earned 10 points towards next year's Kentucky Oaks (G1).
