Tawny Port, who rallied to finish seventh in the Kentucky Derby, drew post 7 Monday and was made the 3-1 morning-line favorite among the eight 3-year-olds entered into the 88th Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby, which will be run Saturday at Thistledown.

Owned by John Fort and trained by Brad Cox, Tawny Port will be ridden for the first time by leading U.S. rider Irad Ortiz Jr. This will be the first start for the Lexington Stakes (G3) winner since he finished 4 3/4 lengths behind 80-1 long shot Rich Strike on May 7 at Churchill Downs.

Two other Kentucky Derby horses also were entered for Saturday’s race. White Abarrio, the Florida Derby (G1) winner who came in 16th at Louisville, will be ridden again by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. He drew post 5 and was made the 7-2 second choice on the morning line. Classic Causeway, a two-time graded-stakes winner at Tampa Bay Downs who since finished 11th in the Florida and Kentucky derbies, got the outside post and odds of 6-1. Making his first start for trainer Kenny McPeek, he will be ridden for the first time by Brian Hernandez Jr.

Sir Barton victor Ethereal Road, whose 11th-hour scratch allowed Rich Strike into the Kentucky Derby, and Barese, who was first in the Gander during the Aqueduct winter, were the other two stakes winners drawn into the Ohio Derby field. Ethereal Road in post 4 was installed at 4-1 and Barese in post 1 at 9-2.

Allowance winner Droppin G’s and maiden victors Brigadier General and Pineapple Man also were entered.

Unlike stakes leading to the Kentucky Derby, this race allows Lasix, which every runner except Classic Causeway will be using. Barese and White Abarrio will be getting the medication for the first time in their careers.

The Ohio Derby will be the last of 11 races on the Saturday card and is scheduled to start at 5:35 p.m. EDT. The National Weather Service in Cleveland forecast a sunny, 91-degree day for Thistledown.
