Live Oak Plantation's We Deer You darted through a narrow opening along the hedge at the top of the stretch and sprinted clear to capture Friday's $100,000 Lucky Coin for 4-year-olds and up at Saratoga Race Course.

We Deer You, second in the Grade 3 Vigil over Woodbine's synthetic surface in his previous start, ran 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01.86 over a firm Mellon turf course for his fourth career victory and first in stakes company.

Sent off at 7-1 in the field of seven older turf sprinters, We Deer You returned $16.20 for a $2 win bet. It was 1 ¾ lengths back to Loose On the Town in second, followed by Big Rock, 9-5 favorite Dowse's Beach, Ready for Rye, Spring to the Sky and Doctor J Dub. Dream Mover and Undrafted were scratched.

"We supplemented into this race; it was a last-minute thought, to be honest. We were shopping around for him and I was a little reluctant to do two turns with him again. This just seemed to fall into place," winning Maryland-based trainer Mike Trombetta said. "He's one of those kind of horses that if you grab a hold of him he tries to resent it. He likes to run on his own. We were just hoping for a good pace, I didn't think the first quarter went too fast; I was like, 'Oh no,' but it all worked out."

We Deer You, ridden for the first time by Irad Ortiz, Jr., was last from the gate as Grade 3 winner Doctor J Dub sprinted to the lead and took the field through an opening quarter-mile in 22.51 seconds and a half in 45.16. Dowse's Beach tracked in the clear in second flanked by Loose On the Town, with Grade 2 winner Ready for Rye in fourth on the inside.

Dowse's Beach wrested a short lead from Doctor J Dub at the head of the stretch while We Deer You remained in last, waiting for an opening on the inside. After straightening for home Ortiz guided We Deer You past a tiring Doctor J Dub, surviving a claim of foul by his rider, Ricardo Santana, Jr.

"I had the perfect trip," Ortiz said. "He had a great break out of the gate so I let him settle for as long as I could. That was the key. There was plenty of room [on the inside] and he finished very well."

We Deer You, part of Trombetta's string at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Maryland, now has four wins and a second with $186,077 in purse earnings from seven career starts.

"He had some issues when he was young. We had to give him some extra time. He's always trained well and, obviously, he's been a lot of fun," Trombetta said. "To win this, he put it all together."
