It was going to take something truly special entering the final weekend of 2018 Kentucky Derby preps to unseat Justify as the race’s favorite. Though Magnum Moon didn’t accomplish that, his victory in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby did, however, cement the colt as the second choice at the Wynn Las Vegas.

In new odds distributed Saturday evening, Justify is 5-2 and Magnum Moon now 5-1, down from 9-1 before his four-length win at Oaklawn Park.

For horse players seeking a price, there’s promise in this edition of the Derby.

Both the top choices are testing the “curse of Apollo,” as a horse hasn’t won the Derby without racing at age 2 since 1882. And that's the only time it's happened. Magnum Moon debuted Jan. 13 and is 4-for-4. Justify got to the races Feb. 18 and is 3-for-3.

Champion Good Magic and 18 1/2-length UAE Derby winner Mendelssohn are co-second choices at the Wynn, where Florida Derby winner Audible and Bolt d’Oro are third on the board at 8-1.

The Wynn has whittled its interests down to 27 horses — the 20 currently in position to compete May 5 at Churchill Downs, plus the horses in a position to enter the field on points should others defect.

In terms of others that raced Saturday, Grade 3 Lexington Stakes winner My Boy Jack is 20-1, down from 45-1, with Arkansas Derby runner-up Quip also 20-1 and third-place finisher Solomini 25-1.
