Thunder Snow holds at No. 2 in Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s 4-year-old McKinzie, winner of both the Alysheba Stakes (G2) and the Whitney (G1), locked up the No. 1 position in the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings for the 10th consecutive week, it was announced Tuesday.

Trained by three-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Bob Baffert, McKinzie accumulated 303 votes to lead Godolphin’s two-time Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Thunder Snow, who scratched the morning of the Whitney with a fever.

Initial reports indicated Thunder Snow remain in the U.S. for the Aug. 31 Woodward (G1), also at Saratoga. But trainer Saeed bin Suroor told The Thoroughbred Daily News on Tuesday that the Godolphin runner shipped back to England.

“The Breeders’ Cup is obviously the plan, and I’d like to get a race in somewhere," bin Suroor told The TDN. "But until we can start training him again, we don’t know where that will be. It was just unlucky. Before the race, he had been training really well, and he would have had a good chance in the race.”

Thunder Snow also ran in last year's Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park as his final Breeders' Cup Classic prep. This year's edition, a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Classic, is set for Sept. 28.

Behind McKinzie and Thunder Snow, Gary and Mary West's Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Maximum Security rose a spot to third in the Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings, swapping with Yoshida, the Whitney runner-up. Seeking the Soul, a top contender for Saturday's Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar, rounded out the Top 5.

The Breeders’ Cup  Classic Rankings, a weekly listing of the Top 10 horses in contention for the $6 million race set for Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park, are determined by a panel of leading Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Rankings are announced each week through Oct. 15 and can be found on the Breeders’ Cup website along with the list of voting members.

In the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, each voter ranks horses by assigning their allotted votes on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system in descending order.
