Week's fastest horses: Mucho Gusto, Zulu Alpha in rare air

Despite sizable purse cuts and key defections from the dirt division, last Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup Invitational Series produced winning performances on par with much richer races.

Brisnet’s director of marketing, Ed DeRosa, said the 111 Brisnet Speed Ratings earned by $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) hero Mucho Gusto and $1 million Pegasus Turf (G1) winner Zulu Alpha were the best figures recorded since the Breeders’ Cup.

Mucho Gusto rallied by the dueling Mr Freeze and Bodexpress off the turn at Gulfstream Park and flew to a 4 1/2-length victory, finishing up 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.85. Off as the second betting choice after Omaha Beach and Spun to Run scratched, the 5-year-old son of Mucho Macho Man also became the first horse by his sire to eclipse a 110 Brisnet Speed Rating.

A race before, Zulu Alpha overcame tight quarters at the start of the Pegasus Turf, saving ground before zipping up the rail for a two-length victory. Zulu Alpha is the fourth horse by Street Cry to run above a 109 on the Brisnet scale joining select company: Anjaz, Street Sense and Zenyatta.

Both Mucho Gusto and Zulu Alpha were multiple graded stakes winners entering Saturday who became Grade 1 winners for the first time.

Going back to the Breeders’ Cup, the Filly & Mare Turf winner Iridessa posted a 112, one point better than Classic hero Vino Rosso. Since then, Maximum Security’s 108 from the Cigar Mile (G1) matched the next-best championship figures of Sprint winner Mitole and Blue Prize, who reigned in the Distaff.

Seven other stakes winners notched triple-digit Brisnet figures last week, including Aqueduct’s Jazil Stakes winner Mr. Buff, the Houston Ladies Classic (G3) heroine Lady Apple and Pioneer Spirit, a former claimer on the rise who took a division of Oaklawn Park’s Fifth Season Stakes.
