The Olympics of Thoroughbred Horse Racing

2012 Olympics
With just a few days left before the eyes of the world become transfixed on London for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, I decided to have a little fun with it and put a horse racing twist on the big event. What if there were an Olympics of Thoroughbred Horse Racing? America could send over our top two candidates for each event and compete against the world.
Just as their human counterparts in the States field a strong national team each and every Summer Olympics, I think the American stable would be a formidable group. Sure our turf horses might be up against it, but the dirt races of the first ever Olympics of Thoroughbred Horse Racing should be our salvation. I didn’t have time to hold OTHR trials to decide our team, so the following horses represent only my selections for our two representatives in each race.
Dirt six furlongs – Amazombie & Roman Threat
Dirt one mile – Shackleford & Mucho Macho Man
Dirt 1 ¼ miles – Game On Dude & Ron the Greek
Dirt 1 ½ miles – Redeemed & Paynter
Dirt six furlongs (Fillies & Mares) – Turbulent Descent & Musical Romance
Dirt one mile (Fillies & Mares) – It’s Tricky & Groupie Doll
Dirt 1 ¼ miles (Fillies & Mares) – Royal Delta & Grace Hall
Turf six furlongs – Fiddlers Patriot & Saint Leon
Turf one mile – Silver Max & Data Link
Turf 1 ¼ miles – Acclamation & Turbo Compressor
Turf 1 ½ miles – Point of Entry & Dhaamer
Turf six furlongs (Fillies & Mares) – Stopshoppingmaria & Jazzy Idea
Turf one mile (Fillies & Mares) – Tapitsfly & Zagora
Turf 1 ¼ miles (Fillies & Mares) – Lady of Shamrock & Winter Memories
Turf 1 ½ miles (Fillies & Mares) – Aruna & Starformer
Synthetic 1 ¼ miles – Wise Dan & Richard’s Kid
With this group, how many gold, silver, and bronze medals could the American team collect? What are the other countries that could compete with us in the total medal table? And most importantly, are there horses I left off the list that could have made the team if we were able to hold trials? Of course there are … please tell me who they are.

the good sprinter Chinook Pass was a very good eventing horse after his Eclipse days at Longacres and elsewhere.
Game on Dude and Ron The Greek are frauds wait till BC. The Greek won the Big Cap when the ran 44.2/5 109.0 the in Kentucky were the Last 1/8 was run in 14.2/5 by the speed horses. Game on Dude hasn't faced top class early/presser types like Mucho Macho Man and Fort Larned.
Cool I like, and speaking of Thoroughbreds & Olympics if anyone seen Canada's best horse Exponential (22/70) in the Eventing contests he may look familar to some, he raced at Fort Erie and Woodbine under the name War Buckaroo. Not a bad second career huh?
Solid list, too bad the olympics aren't in Nov. like the BC because I still think The Factor will be a factor this fall at Santa Anita. Also, I would consider flip-flopping Zagora & Winter Memories into the different events.
apples to oranges, sprints to routes to marathons, dirt to synthetics to turf.....Cannot compare them logically at all.
Ruler on Ice only on a sloppy track
weres Bode or Paynter?
By the time anything like that ever came into being...Rachel's foal (Taco) & Zenyatta's foal would be racing & we could send them. I don't know if equestrian sports have ever been in the Olympics as the concentration is on the horse or the jockey...the jockey would be the athlete I would think as far as the Olympics go. But I'm not sure because of Dressage & Cross Country equestrian sports which is horse & rider skill combined ie. show form & jumping.
Thank you, Pete.
Sure. If jumping can be an olypic sport, why can't horse racing? I think it's a great idea to see how America's horse match up against the world horses, not just at Breeder's Cup
What a Thought--I would get er done Olympics or not. Every4 years have the Horse racing form of the olympics-Show that it can have a central reg Body. Show that there is interest-That there is Compatitionthat it will draw and be fair. Not only Fair That thru the years WHAT a Tremendous story when you get into the Pedigree-Say on rider rides in 3 olympics But some Pedigree is a 5 time Gold Medal winner... A Fan winner and Gainer for Sure Zipse---Just like How your Blog has Mrphed from one thing-To WORLD CLASS..
7 gold for the U.S. for the dirt races, 8 with the open company turf sprint. If held in the U.S., the 10f. synthetic route would be another gold medal, and Acclamation will be tough to beat at home.
I only went with one event per horse, Mary ... Our 1 1/2 mile horses are a bit light, Matt. I am hopeful Ruler On Ice can get things going again this week.
Great list Brian. I say the USA wins gold in all dirt races except the 1 1/4 mile (I think we get silver/bronze), but Argentinian horse Expressive Halo is really consistent at that distance on dirt. The turf races would obviously be tough, but I cant imagine Acclamation not bringing home some hardware
Turf, one mile: Jeranimo
Cool idea, Brian. Great choices, only one I would leave off is Ruler On Ice, he's too much of a head case.
Acclamation, also turf, 12 f., and synthetic 10f.
