The result of the 2014 edition of the Addison Cammack Handicap had a familiar look to the 2013 edition as Ed Fortino’s Sweet Luca and Midwest Thoroughbreds’ Work All Week finished one-two in the six-furlong Polytrack race. Carlos Marquez Jr. had the mount aboard the Chris Block-trained son of Candy Ride who got the distance in 1:10.65.
Sweet Luca was able to bide his time behind a very quick pace set by longshot Roarin Missile, who jetted through splits of 22.01 seconds, 44.60 seconds and 57.09 seconds before giving way badly in the stretch.
As the pacesetter faded, the 7-10 post time favorite Work All Week grabbed the lead but the 130-pound impost placed on the reigning Illinois Horse of the Year took its toll. Sweet Luca, who was carrying 119 pounds, swept by for the 1¼-length victory - his first since last year’s Cammack and fifth in 21 starts overall. He earned $49,118 for the score to push his bankroll to $322,690.
“I didn’t think they were going to go :22 and :44,” Marquez said. “Today, the instructions he (trainer Chris Block) gave me were ‘You have the 1-hole. Save all the ground you can. When you feel you can, go to the inside but if you have to come around, make sure you switch to the right lead and come and get him’.”
“It was a good trip, I just think giving away 11 pounds got to him a little bit,” said Chris Emigh, who rode the beaten favorite. “When we got into the turn he felt like he was a little more dead than usual. Usually he’s dragging you and you’re trying to slow him down. He tried turning for home, but you could feel the weight exhausting him.”
For trainer Block, winning the Addison Cammack for the second straight year holds a special meaning. “This is a special race for me,” he said. “It’s named after a dear friend of mine. To win it twice with Sweet Luca is really special and I am sure my friend Addison is looking down on us.”
Sent off as second choice Sweet Luca paid $10.60, $3.60 and $2.60. Work All Week returned $2.60 and $2.10. Sir Applesolutely finished third in the nine-horse field and paid $3.40.
Mish Mosh, Four Left Feet, Massive Explosion, Vbreeze, Roarin Missile and Big Looie completed the order of finish.
