Super Screener: Pletcher saddles top Pimlico Special selection

With Friday's Grade 3, $300,000 Pimlico Special extended to 1 1/4 miles for the first time this year, Mike Shutty, author of Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener handicapping system, expects a pace that's right on par for the distance. But the amount of pressure up front figures to set up for a stalker.

That's why he sides with the "other" Todd Pletcher trainee in a field of 14 and on the eve of the Preakness Stakes.

Shutty uses data-driven analysis to handicap top stakes races each weekend. What's available here is a small sample of his work, with the Pimlico Special a free add on race for those who purchase the Preakness Stakes Super Screener.

Horse-by-horse analysis, pace projections and suggested wagers will build around You're to Blame, a 5-year-old son of Distorted Humor making his second start of the season.

"He is one of the few horses in here that is proven going these longer distances, and that is a key separator," Shutty said. "In addition, form cycle analysis projects a big move forward in this his second race off the six-plus month layoff, picking up where he left off when closing his 2018 campaign with his three best races. A razor-sharp work only adds more conviction."

You're to Blame closed last year with two wins in his final three starts, including a victory in Parx Racing's Greenwood Cup (G3) at 1 1/2 miles. He's a 5-1 morning line shot in the Pimlico Special with Rally Cry, Pletcher's top entry according to the odds maker, the tepid 9-2 favorite off a fourth in the Charles Town Classic (G2).

"The stablemate to You’re to Blame will ensure an honest pace," Shutty said. "He tracked a soft pace in the Charles Town Classic but faded thereafter. I'm not putting much credence on the numbers from that race. Rally Cry was best in 2017."

With exacta, trifecta and superfecta tickets listed by the Super Screener, You're to Blame is one of three "A" horses for Shutty, the others being Cordmaker (12-1) and Just Whistle (20-1), who picks up jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and "projects to produce a new lifetime top."
