Trainer Bob Baffert describes Chasing Yesterday, the half sister of Triple Crown American Pharoah, as “a sweetheart.”
“When she gets on the track, though,” Baffert added, “she’s like Pharaoh — all racehorse. She just turns it on.”
That’s the type of runner Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system is touting in Saturday’s Grade 1, $350,000 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga, where Chasing Yesterday will make her second career start.
Inspiration for our Super Screener Stakes Weekly analysis came from our loyal Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Super customers. They have often asked us for a product focused on analyzing the key graded stakes that run each weekend throughout the year.
What's offered here is a small sample of the full product, which will also handicap the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes and other featured races this weekend.
Even as the Spinaway's morning line favorite, Chasing Yesterday could offer some value given she’ll face 11 rivals. The pace projects to be near par but with solid pressure, as eight of the 12 runners are pace or presser types. All but one filly will be stretching out to the longer distance of seven furlongs, and most in this field are bred to handle it.
Jockey Mike Smith is traveling to New York with Chasing Yesterday, who looks like quite a beast. She won her debut at will and did so tracking a hot pace, then drew away in hand easily with a strong gallop out.
Chasing Yesterday will relish the added ground here, and you have to love those long, six-furlong works that no other rival in this field has come close to yet in the mornings. She’s a strong win contender here and one that wagering strategy should be centered around.
Added ground will be welcomed as Chasing Yesterday presses the pace and continues on.
