Super Screener: Channel Maker not a Mac Diarmida single

Just after they run Saturday’s Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, a big-name turf runner returns in the Grade 2, $400,000 Mac Diarmida. But Channel Maker is only one of two must-use horses in the 1 3/8-mile race, according to Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system.

Authored by Mike Shutty, the Super Screener analyzes key races run each weekend throughout the year. What's offered here is a small sample of the full product, which this week also includes picks throughout the Fountain of Youth card, including suggested late Pick 4 and Pick 5 tickets.

So, why not take 9-5 favorite Channel Maker alone on top? It has nothing to do with an outside draw in the field of 11, as Shutty expects the 5-year-old shouldn’t have to expend too much energy in securing a nice early position.

“He certainly hasn’t faced a field as easy as this one in some time,” Shutty said of a horse who last ran in the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1), “and given that fact and his pace dominance among these, he is a legitimate ‘A’ contender. But he certainly has disappointed before, so shy away from singling him horizontally or vertically. A lesser prize is more certain.”

Shutty recommends playing Zulu Alpha, a 3-1 shot, along with the favorite.

“He is in peak form right now, and the last two at Gulfstream Park were his top efforts,” Shutty said. “Zulu Alpha has an advantage, as he’ll comfortably press a pace that is projected to be average. He gets this distance and the slight cutback plus the way he evenly distributes energy will aid him again here.

“Not a cinch to win this, but Zulu Alpha is a solid choice.”

Shutty believes Zulu Alpha and Channel Maker should have a “stranglehold” on the win spot in tickets. Given their expected odds, however, his suggested trifecta and superfecta plays will be what generate a much larger profit.

Just last week on the Gulfstream Park turf, Shutty recommended a $1 trifecta that returned $508 in the Melody of Colors Stakes, and his 53-1 top longshot behind Vasilika in Santa Anita Park’s Buena Vista (G2) rounded out a lucrative exacta.
