Sunday workouts: 31 graded-stakes winners breeze Sunday

A mare who had been retired was back in training Sunday morning, two weeks after she won her Grade 1 comeback at Keeneland.

Regal Glory worked a half-mile in 49.8 seconds at Belmont Park for trainer Chad Brown, who was at Churchill Downs at the time looking after Zandon’s preparations for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

After owner Peter Brant decided to send the Animal Kingdom mare from Spendthrift Farm back to Brown’s stable, Regal Glory won the Jenny Wiley (G1) at Keeneland. It was her third consecutive victory, all in graded stakes. Brown has not said yet what her next race may be. 

There were at least 31 graded-stakes winners who worked Sunday morning across the U.S.

Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2022 Jenny Wiley, 2021 Matriarch), worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds at Belmont Park on Sunday morning. It was the 26th fastest of 50 works at the distance. This was her first work since her last race. In her last start she won the Jenny Wiley (G1) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Keeneland on April 16 for trainer Chad Brown.

Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), a three-time Grade 1 winner (2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, 2021 Frizette, 2021 Spinaway), worked four furlongs in 50.8 seconds at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning. It was the 33rd fastest of 42 works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going six furlongs at Churchill Downs. In her last start she won the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Fair Grounds on March 26 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Gufo (Declaration of War), a two-time Grade 1 winner (2021 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer 2020, Belmont Derby Invitational), worked five furlongs in 1:04.0 at Belmont Park on Sunday morning. It was the 14th fastest of 15 works at the distance. His previous work was 15 days ago going five furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start he won the Pan American (G2) going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Gulfstream Park on April 2 for trainer Christophe Clément.

Max Player (Honor Code), a Grade 1 winner (2021 Jockey Club Gold Cup), worked four furlongs in 51.2 seconds at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning. It was the 36th fastest of 42 works at the distance. Henley’s Joy (Kitten’s Joy), a Grade 1 winner (2019 Belmont Derby Invitational), worked four furlongs in 47.6 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the fastest of 27 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed third in an allowance race going 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Santa Anita on April 16 for trainer Richard Baltas.

Count Again (Awesome Again), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Frank E. Kilroe Mile), worked four furlongs in 50.6 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the 22nd fastest of 27 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed sixth in the Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) going one mile on the turf at Keeneland on April 15 for trainer Phil D’Amato.

Going to Vegas (Goldencents), a Grade 1 winner (2021 Rodeo Drive), worked five furlongs in 1:00.6 at Santa Anita on Sunday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 26 works at the distance.
