Smith to Pilot Hansen in West Va. Derby

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will be aboard 2011 2-year-old champion Hansen when the colt makes a start in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) Aug. 4 at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort, owner Dr. Kendall Hansen and Smith confirmed July 25.

Smith replaces regular rider Ramon Dominguez, who has chosen to honor previous commitments on the day.

"He's a famous rider and it'll be nice to team up with him for the race," Dr. Hansen said of Smith. "Ramon has a couple great mounts he doesn't want to pass up and I certainly understand that. How many times do you get a Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner and a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner picking up the mount on your horse?"

Same here tv
The latter is a prodigy, but ultimately unless he is on the right horse, etiher rider would not make that much a difference since it is the horse doing the running not the rider
Smith is a awesome jockey. But Ramon is better........
top riders go where they want. Just ask Bailey, McCarron or Pincay
Either Mike Smith has the greatest agent in the world or he has made a deal with the devil.
Mike Smith is just in the right place at the right time and picks up another great mount and most likely will be posing in the winners circle with the talented Hansen aka The White Tornado.

Dressage, it is nice to have a REAL rider's perspective knowing that it is the animal undernetah them that is the star
Zenyatta and Hansen are completely different horses. And almost any jockey can do great on a good horse.
He did great with Zenyatta
say it ain't so!
