Shedaresthedevil draws off for easy win at odds-on in Indiana Oaks

Shedaresthedevil collected another 20 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Oaks with a dominant win as the odds-on favorite in the Grade 3, $200,000 Indiana Oaks at Indiana Grand on Wednesday.

With Florent Geroux in the irons, Shedaresthedevil stalked a few lengths back in second behind as Miss T Too, the 9-2 second choice, carved opening fractions of :23.19 and :46.20 for a half mile. It was a strung out field down the backstretch, with Shedaresthedevil  traveling ahead of Impeccable Style and 50-1 longshot Spartanka.

Entering the far turn, Shedaresthedevil took aim at Miss T Too and drew on even terms inside the three-eighths pole after six furlongs reached in 1:11.03. Shedaresthedevil quickly put away the pacesetter and through the stretch drew off to win in a final time of 1:43.50.

Impeccable Style made a mild bid into the stretch before flattening out to be second best and was followed across the wire by Bayerness and Fire Coral. The Indiana Oaks paid Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top four finishers on a scale of 20-8-4-2.

Trained by Brad Cox, Shedaresthedevil paid $3.20. The daughter of Daredevil won the Honeybee (G3) at Oaklawn Park earlier this year and was exiting a high-level allowance win at Churchill Downs on June 5 for owners Qatar Racing and Flurry Racing.

“Big favorite. We expected her to run well," Cox said. "She’d been training the part out of her last race at Churchill, where she ran a big race. It was a good trip, she responded well. I thought she looked great at the quarter pole."

Shedaresthedevil improved her record to 9: 4-2-2 with earnings approaching $500,000. She now has 90 Kentucky Oaks points to rank third on the leaderboard behind Swiss Skydiver and Bonny South.

Cox said it remains to be determined if Shedaresthedevil starts again before the Sept. 4 Kentucky Oaks.

“She’s got enough points to get in," Cox said. "I won’t say we’ll make it easy on her, but as easy on her as we can to try to get her into the Oaks the best way and get her there with some confidence.”
