See it: Omaha Beach 'getting his air' in latest Del Mar workout

Inside of a month from his scheduled return to the races, Grade 1 winner Omaha Beach tuned up Monday morning with his second workout back from throat surgery.

After the War Front colt breezed through a half mile in 49.20 seconds, finishing about a length in front of workmate Magical Kiss, trainer Richard Mandella told XBTV's Camilla Yakteen that Omaha Beach is "getting his air."
Campaigned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms, Omaha Beach hasn't raced since winning the Arkansas Derby (G1) with a performance that led to morning line favoritism in the Kentucky Derby. Of course, between the draw and the first Saturday in May, connections scratched having discovered an entrapped epiglottis that would have hindered Omaha Beach's chances trying to run 1 1/4 miles.

“It’s frustration I have a lot of experience with,” Mandella told Horse Racing Nation last week. “Training horses will teach it to you. It’s no big deal. It’s something we live with all the time.”

The Hall of Fame conditioner is pointing Omaha Beach to the Aug. 25 Shared Belief Stakes, a local one-mile event worth $100,000, that could springboard him into races such as the Sept. 21 Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup Classic.
