Record-setting filly Covfefe returns to Grade 1 company next

Trainer Brad Cox is narrowing the list of possible spots for Covfefe’s next appearance following a track record-setting victory Friday in Pimlico Race Course’s Miss Preakness (G3).

Cox told XBTV’s Zoe Cadman that it’ll be “a Grade 1 somewhere,” with Saratoga’s Aug. 3 Test (G1) — also the intended spot for West Coast star Bellafina — among the options.

“Her race first off the layoff at Keeneland was very impressive, and she followed it up (Friday) with a spectacular performance to say the least,” Cox told Cadman after Covfefe blazed six furlongs in 1:07.70.

The previous track record of 1:09 was set by Northern Wolf on Aug. 18, 1990.

“To expect that, no,” Cox said. “But she showed she’s capable of big things and she’s very nice filly — a lot of quality.”

Cox said the morning after the race that Covfefe, a daughter of Into Mischief campaigned by LNJ Foxwoods, was eating will and “full of herself.” Still, “an effort like that, you want to give her plenty of time to recover from.”

Covfefe improved her record to 3-0-0 from four starts. She ran fourth in her other race, the Fritzette (G1), which came just three weeks after a flashy Churchill Downs debut won by a widening 9 1/4 lengths.
