Named for one of the most beloved figures in Santa Anita’s long, storied history, the $75,000 Eddie Logan Stakes will highlight an eight-race program on Friday, Dec. 29. Born May 2, 1910, Logan operated his shoeshine stand at Santa Anita from it’s opening on Dec. 25, 1934 through New Year’s Day, 2009. Affectionately known as the “Footman,” Logan passed at age 98 on Jan. 31, 2009.
This year’s Logan marks the 12th running of the one mile turf affair for 2-year-olds and it has attracted a field of eight, headed by trainer Vladimir Cerin’s Pubilius Syrus, Keith Desormeaux’s Ayacara and Jeff Mullins’ East Rand.
The primary Eddie Logan contenders are as follows:
Owner: Holly and David Wilson Trainer: Vladimir Cerin
With his last four starts all coming at a mile on turf, he was most recently second, beaten 4 ¼ lengths in the Grade III Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 26. A nose winner of a maiden special weight here on Sept. 30, this Kentucky-bred colt by Candy Ride was off at 6-1 in the DeMille and finished 2 ¼ lengths clear of East Rand, who he will face again in the Logan. He’ll retain the services of Kent Desormeaux, who likely could’ve ridden his brother’s Ayacara, a solid contender in good recent form. With a win, a second and a third, Pubilius Syrus has only been off the board once in his four one mile turf tries—a close fourth three starts back in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Sept. 3.
Owner: Cynthia and Charles K. Marquis Trainer: Keith Desormeaux
Fourth, beaten 13 ¾ lengths by superstar Bolt d’Oro two starts back in the mile and one sixteenth FrontRunner Stakes here on Sept. 30, this English-bred colt rallied from off the pace to be second by three quarters of a length on synthetic Tapeta in the one mile Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields Dec. 2—suggesting that he should be comfortable in what will be his first turf assignment next Friday. An $85,000 Keeneland September yearling, Ayacara will be ridden for the first time by Corey Nakatani.
Owner: Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, LLC Trainer: Jeff Mullins
Far back early in an 11-horse field, East Rand rallied to be third, beaten 6 ½ lengths in the Grade III Cecile B. DeMille Stakes on Nov. 26, his first start for Mullins. Originally based in the Midwest, he broke his maiden going a flat mile on turf in his second start, four races back at Belterra Park (Indiana) on Aug. 18. Second by a length in a second condition allowance at one mile on turf two starts back at Churchill Downs Sept. 29, East Rand has run three of his five races at the Logan distance, finishing first, second and third and is thus a stout contender from off the pace with Drayden Van Dyke back aboard.
