Premier Pegasus Serves Notice in San Felipe

Premier Pegasus
Premier Pegasus jumped to the head of the West Coast Kentucky Derby class with a romping 7-3/4 length score in Saturday's San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Albergatti and an overbet Runflatout broke the gate running and set taxing fractions of :21.75 and :44.58. Comma To The Top sat just off the two leaders and briefly took command after six furlongs in 1:08.98.

The new leader figured to be in trouble because of the taxing pace and Premier Pegasus burst out of the pack and hit the front turning for home under Alonso Quinonez. The race was over in the blink of an eye and he completed his eight and one-half furlong journey in 1:41.23. He paid a generous $16.60.

Jaycito rallied from the back to land the place with Bench Points checking in 3rd. Comma To The Top rounded out the superfecta. Quail Hill passed tired horses to finish 5th and was followed by Awesome Patriot, Surrey Star, Jakesam, Albergatti, and Runflatout.

The winner, owned, bred, and trained by Myung Kwon Cho, won all three of his 2010 starts including the Hollywood Prevue (G3). He began his 3-year-old season with a solid show finish in the seven furlong San Vicente (G2) and is now the clear favorite for the Santa Anita Derby following his romping victory on Saturday.

Premier Pegasus, by Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, also has classic breeding on the female side with Preakness winning dam sire Summer Squall. He is not one of the individual betting interests in pool two of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

He had a perfect trip(understatement),was in against sprinters with the exception of two who made their first start of 2011,Jaycito and Awsome Patriot ,how could he look bad? Still don't know where he's at as CTTT could only bring him a mile before he was through. That left him even better than "loose on the lead" as the only horse in the race who could get the distance of 1 1/16 mile.He looked good but others still have to be heard from.
  • logrezzio · You are right. Most of that field was also rans in the Derby. Most will never get in. Premier Pegasus ran a nice race but will need to run outside Santa Anita to gauge cause the new dirt track is shallow and fast. Not even close to the surface he will encounter at churchill. If Premiere Pegasus, Sway Away and the Factor met at say, Oaklawn in April, we could know the truth about these 3. Love that Santa Anita is back to dirt..hate that the surface is so biased. · 2441 days ago
As usual Baffert used this race to get a feel for Jaycito. Look for a mucj improved race next out. Premier Pegasus looked good. Comma did well after being close to that ridiculous pace.
By far, the most impressive performance of any Kentucky Derby hopeful I saw on Saturday!! These were supposed to be many of the best west coast Derby prospects, and Premier Pegasus routed them with authority!! According to Bob Baffert, Jaycito is supposed to be his top Kentucky Derby hopeful, and Bench Points came into the San Felipe 4 for 4 lifetime. This was truly an impressive stretch drive by Premier Pegasus to win the San Felipe Stakes. Whether or not he can repeat that type of run in the Santa Anita Derby? Time will tell!!
He's not in any of my derby pools but Premier Pegasus won a very solid mile and 1/16 San Felipe Stakes. This is the first of the derby prep races that actually had a pretty good field. He beat Comma to the Top, Jaycito and Runflatout. Runflatout was a 1st time starter who became the Ky Derby Pool 2 favorite earlier today. . . at least before he ran into the buzzsaw that was Premier Pegasus.
