While trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore elected to attend the 2018 Kentucky Derby, order remained back home in Europe, where Saxon Warrior dashed down the center of the track to win the Group 1, $675,000 Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Saturday’s straight 1-mile feature on the turf is an equivalent of sorts to the Derby overseas and one Moore, the world-class jockey, elected to skip to ride Mendelssohn at Churchill Downs.

Saxon Warrior went off a 3-1 second choice on the board in America. He’ll also ride the second choice in the Derby, while Mendelssohn is considered the favorite overseas having won his last three races, on three continent, and on three different types of surfaces.

The 2000 Guineas victory was the ninth for O'Brien, whose son, Donnacha, was in the irons. Tip To Win ran second with Masar third.

Saxon Warrior and Mendelssohn also share the same Coolmore connections.

From here, it's likely Saxon Warrior goes on to the Epsom Derby, stretching to 1 1/4 miles.
