No debate here: Justify lands spot on ESPN's 'Dominant 20' list

While Triple Crown winner Justify and Accelerate are debated as Horse of the Year contenders, there is no question which of the two resonated more in 2018 with the general public. On Tuesday, ESPN The Magazine announced the unbeaten son of Scat Daddy, retired to Coolmore's Ashford Stud following his Belmont Stakes victory, is No. 16 on its "Dominant 20" list of athletes from the year.

"Senior writer Peter Keating developed a statistical methodology to determine the list of athletes who redefined the impossible," according to an ESPN news release.

ESPN graded athletes on their strongest performances using timed scores, earnings and, wherever possible, advanced metrics. Historical feats were also considered -- hence, likely why Justify made this list as racing's 13th Triple Crown winner ever -- "and results were adjusted to put those athletes onto one common baseline, yielding our ratings."

A "Dominant 20" TV special will air on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. Dec. 20. The full list:
