Newspaperofrecord to make one U.S. start before Royal Ascot

Newspaperofrecord, the unbeaten Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner who looks as if she could be any kind, will indeed target a run at the famed Royal Ascot meeting this summer -- but only after featuring on one of the United States' biggest cards of the year.

According to the Racing Post, who spoke with Ascot head of communications Nick Smith, the Chad Brown-trained daughter of Lope De Vega will kick off her season "on Kentucky Oaks day at Churchill Downs," site of her last win.

Churchill cards the Grade 3, $250,000 Edgewood on the first Friday in May going 1 1/16 miles. After that?

"We had a very encouraging meeting with Chad Brown," said Smith, who made a recent trip to the U.S., "and he's very keen to bring Newspaperofrecord to the Coronation Stakes, to the extent he is planning a prep campaign for her very much with Royal Ascot in mind."

Newspaperofrecord returned to the work tab Monday at Palm Meadows Training Center, breezing three furlongs in 36 seconds to get her year started.

Last season the Klaravich Stables runner went from maiden victory to winning Belmont Park's Miss Grillo (G2) before the Breeders' Cup. Newspaperofrecord has never been seriously challenged on the racetrack, winning each of her three starts by six lengths and change, massive margins on the turf.

"She really stole the show on the first day of the Breeders' Cup," Smith told the Racing Post, "and it was very much a case of (Brown) feels this is a horse he can travel with. She's straightforward and has the class to compete – she'd have a very serious chance."

Open to 3-year-old fillies, the Coronation Stakes runs at just short of a mile during the Royal Ascot meeting the lasts from Tuesday, June 18, through Saturday, June 22.
