More than 100 people rallied in the New York State Capitol on Monday in support of legislation to improve Belmont Park.

The supporters included union members, farmers, backstretch workers, small business owners, veterinarians, trainers and others, according to a news release from We Are NY Racing, a coalition that supports the industry.

The proposal calls for the state to issue $455 million in bonds for the improvements, which include a new grandstand and clubhouse.

As part of the proposal, the New York Racing Association would give up its lease on the Aqueduct property, which the state owns and could then redevelop. Aqueduct’s race dates would be moved to Belmont Park.

Supporters say the project would strengthen racing in the state and create thousands of jobs.

Critics include those who oppose state subsidies for racing, others who question whether the state will receive a return on its investment and animal-rights advocates.

Belmont Park was last renovated in 1968, according to NYRA. The plan also calls for improvements on the backstretch, including more housing, and opening the track’s 45-acre infield for community uses.
