Reigning 3-year-old champion filly Monomoy Girl on Saturday morning checked another box toward a return to the races by working five furlongs on trainer Brad Cox’s watch in 59 4/5 seconds.

In the meantime, her connections are perusing options, with a new one in the mix after that breeze at Churchill Downs.

“The gallop out was just OK, but that’s just her,” Cox said, with another furlong totaling 1:14 by his clocking. “That’s how she was last year. The work itself was fantastic. We’ll keep picking it up each week.”

Cox said Monomoy Girl, who hasn’t raced yet this season after a springtime colic scare, could stay home for Churchill Downs’ Sept. 28 Ack Ack (G3), a one-turn mile worth $150,000. That race is expected to attract, among others, star 3-year-old colt Omaha Beach.

An early trip to the Breeders’ Cup host site, Santa Anita Park, for the Zenyatta Stakes (G1) is also in play. The $200,000 race goes at 1 1/16 miles but would keep the daughter of Tapizar against her gender only.

Cox also mentioned Keeneland’s Oct. 6 Spinster (G1). The 1 1/8-mile race, also restricted to fillies and mares, runs at the site where Monomoy Girl trained for and won last year’s Ashland (G1) to prep for the Kentucky Oaks.

As for a final decision, “It has a lot to do with the field size and who’s going into those races coming back,” Cox said. “She doesn’t have to win, but we just want to keep her as competitive as we can keep her first race off the layoff.”

A nice prep could lead into a defense of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and a 5-year-old campaign.

“That’s the goal — for her to run in 2020 and start off now,” Cox said. “We’ll see where it goes.”

Monomoy Girl worked in company Saturday morning with British Idiom, a 2-year-old daughter of Flashback who broke her maiden on debut Aug. 15 at Saratoga. Cox said British Idiom, who shares some ownership with Monomoy Girl, was breezing toward her stakes debut in Churchill Downs' Pocahontas (G2) next weekend.
