After Breeders' Cup try, Mo See Cal returns in Del Mar's Betty Grable

Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen’s Mo See Cal will receive some major class relief Sunday when she drops from the Breeders’ Cup Distaff to Del Mar's $100,000 Betty Grable Stakes. A field of seven California-breds are entered for the seven-furlong contest with Mo See Cal one of three representing the Peter Miller barn.

Dismissed at 52-1 in the Nov. 2 Distaff, Mo See Cal attended the pace and split the field when finishing checking in sixth behind Blue Prize at Santa Anita Park. Prior to the Distaff, the 4-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo scored a front-running win by 5 ½ lengths in an allowance optional claimer event on Oct. 10.

Mo See Cal sports two wins in six starts at Del Mar and has only been out of the money once. Abel Cedillo, who was aboard for Mo See Cal’s most recent win, will be back in the saddle Sunday.

Miller and Rockingham Ranch will also team up with Love a Honeybadger, who with Starr of David are the two stakes winners in the seven-horse field. Love a Honeybadger won the off-the-turf California Distaff at Santa Anita on Oct. 13, but in two subsequent starts has missed the board including when fifth, beaten 16 lengths in an Oct. 25 allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita.

Miller also entered Creative Instinct, an improving 3-year-old filly for Gary Barber who exits a front-running optional claiming win at Santa Anita on Oct. 27. However, the trainer said after entries were taken that either Creative Instinct or Love a Honeybadger would be scratched.

“I’m not going to run Creative Instinct and Honeybadger because they’re both speed horses,” Miller said. “I’ll run one of them and Mo See Cal.”

Starr of Quality won the one-mile Dreams of Summer Stakes at Santa Anita in June and most recently was third behind Mo See Cal in that Oct. 10 optional claiming event. The 5-year-old daughter of First Dude has won six times and hit the board in 17-of-24 lifetime starts.

The Betty Grable, carded as Race 7 on Sunday, goes to post at 6:30 p.m. ET.
