Maidens to Watch in 2014

It has been said that no man ever committed suicide who had an unraced juvenile in his barn. Say what you will about racing young horses, but they are one of the most fun and exciting parts of the game.

Last year I found five maidens and tracked them for a few months. While they competed admirably, some of them in G1’s, all five are still maidens. This year, I’ve got twice as many maidens, and I think they’re twice as good. I’ve also decided to implement a new system for these horses. Based on the tendency of black type to be hereditary, sales prices, conformation, truenicks ratings, and dosage/reines, I have found a few horses who could really be something.

Unnamed (Awesome Again - Joyful by Distorted Humor) A++ | $235,000

A well bred chestnut colt that is a half to graded stakes winner Cleburne, this colt has significant speed but also plenty of stamina influences. His third maternal dam is Alabama winner Gay Matelda. Sold prior to Cleburne getting black type, he still brought an amount in the perfect range, and is built balanced and well. Born in New York.

Just too Perfect (Pleasantly Perfect - Winter Tide by Tale of the Cat) B+ | $50,000 by West Point Tb

A “steal” as Terry Finley puts it, this is a big, scopey filly who will only get better as she matures and the distances get longer. TrueNicks rating is behind, but her physical is stunning. Phenomenal heart rating and great work. Will definitely favor going longer. Born in Kentucky.

Toasting Master (Congrats - Broadway Gold by Seeking the Gold) A+ | $220,000 by West Point Tb

A half to Broadway’s Alibi, and built quite well too. Plenty of speed at both the sprinting and classic distances, and in the perfect price range, his conformation is defining and balanced as well. Born in Florida.

Remake (Thunder Gulch - Divine Lady by Kris S.) A++ | Unknown price

A mare with consistent black type in her pedigree, she traces through her maternal line to the great race mare Moccasin. She has sprinting ability as well as significant classic ability, and is built quite nicely. Out of a very productive family. Born in Kentucky.

Exodus (Medaglia D’Oro - Stop Traffic by Cure the Blues) A++ | $600,000 by Fox Hill Farm

A half to late developing Cross Traffic, Fox Hill Farm wasted no time in snagging this one. By a classic distance stallion, he has significant miler and classic influence, and should resemble his older brother. Currently training in Florida, he should be a later developer. Born in Kentucky.

Savoy Stomp (Medaglia D’Oro - Crystal Current by A P Indy) A | Unknown price by Team Valor

Probably the best horse Barry Irwin will be campaigning this year, this one stood out at the Saratoga sale this summer and has not ceased since. He is of good build, pedigree, and distance ability. This lovely colt was born in Kentucky.

Ravenscroft (Ghostzapper - Sorority Sister by Include) A++ | Unknown price by Zayat Stables

The only thing that could stop Ghostzapper was himself. Plagued by unsoundness, the Include bloodlines look they’re doing something as far as this one’s conformation. Could really be anything, but whatever she is, she’s going to be good. Born in New York.

Depositor (Medaglia D’Oro - Hidden Reserve by Mr. Prospector) A | Homebred for Phipps Stable

From good old Phipps bloodlines and a half to minor stakes winner Philanthropist, he has a lot of bloodline to live up to. Another Medaglia D’Oro, will almost certainly be a classic contender. Born in Kentucky.

Old Sport (War Front - Classy Date by Saint Ballado) A++ | Unknown price by Let’s Go Stables

A flashy black colt, this one is going to be a monster on the turf. He has significant classic influence and a good balanced body. Great paternal influence, female family is okay. Born in the state of Kentucky.

Isabella Sings (Eskendereya - Isobel Baillie by Lomitas) D | Unknown price

TrueNicks rating is distorted by the international bloodline, this one is one of the best Todd Pletcher has this year. A classic distance loving filly, she moves wonderfully, and is by ill-fated Eskendereya. Born in the state of Kentucky.

Upuvlan (Smart Strike - Leave Me Alone by Bold Badgett) A++ | $280,000

With a TrueNicks variant of 65 (about 60 points higher than the minimum for an A++), strong bloodlines that includes being out of a Test Stakes winner, and that perfect purchase price, this one is really a standout. Born in Kentucky.

Dynaformersrequest (Dynaformer - Thissongsforyou by Unbridled’s Song) A++ | $600,000

The class of the crop, conformed flawlessly, the only thing that can stop this one is soundness issues. If he will prefer the turf or dirt, we don’t know, but he is more than worth his purchase price. One of the last colts out of Dynaformer’s last crop, this guy has a TrueNicks variant of 103, the second highest I have ever seen, behind only Afleet Alex. Born in Kentucky.

Two stakes winners. 5 winners out of 7 runners. Not bad. Not great, but not bad. Liking the odds
Certainly, she looked wonderful too. Just concerned, Jostle has not been a great broodmare
Ah yes, I briefly forgot about that one. It was actually a filly. She's been named Betrothed- a beautiful name
Dressage, have you seen the Jostle's 2012 colt? I think he's by Summer Bird.
I think my boy D'Oro is going to have an excellent crop this year. I'm also very excited to see the debut of Summer Bird's foals. The ones I an currently keeping track of by him: Amanda Renee (Damsire- Elusive Quaility); Bird of Paradise out of Aweemaway (Damsire- Skipaway) and "niece" to Wise Dan; Critical Summer out of Critical Eye, G1 winner (Damsire- Dynaformer); Second Summer out of Greenstreet, stakes winner and dam of Dry Summer- a stakes winner (damsire- Street Cry).
