With just a four-horse field lined up, Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity is admittedly a difficult sell to bettors. But in terms of the 2020 Kentucky Derby trail, it is still an interesting race to watch with 10 qualifying points awarded to the winner.

Here’s a closer look at the field, which will break as Race 4 at Los Alamitos, where post time is 4:58 p.m. ET. Projected morning line odds are by Horse Racing Nation.

1. Anneau d'Or, 7/2 (Medaglia d'Oro – Blaine Wright/Juan Hernandez – 2: 1-1-0): His dirt debut in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile was mostly a solid effort. Anneau d'Or stalked the pace and just missed mowing down fellow longshot Storm the Court after a stretch battle. It is a slight negative, though, that he had a clear path and couldn’t quite get the job done. The Santa Anita dirt surface was playing quirky as well and possibly affected some other horses. In this spot, he could work better underneath if an exacta is even worthwhile enough to play.  Use underneath.

2. Wrecking Crew, 6-1 (Sky Kingdom – Peter Miller/Abel Cedillo – 4: 1-2-1): This one finished third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, 3 ¼ lengths behind Storm the Court and Anneau d'Or. He had a clear path and actually lost ground to those two horses late. Previously, he ran second in a wild Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Best Pal Stakes (G2), both around one turn. He needs to show more around two turns before trusting him against a talented bunch like this. Toss.

3. Thousand Words, 1-1 (Pioneerof the Nile – Bob Baffert/Flavien Prat – 1: 1-0-0): With a 114 TimeformUS Speed Figure earned in his successful career debut, it is hard not to like this Baffert runner. The dam, Pomeroys Pistol, made her mark as a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter. But it is notable that the third dam Swearingen ran as a turf router in the late 1990s. While Thousand Words still needs to prove himself around two turns, he should handle this step. H’s worthy of the top spot if you’re betting. The pick.

4. High Velocity, 2-1 (Quality Road – Bob Baffert/Drayden Van Dyke – 2: 2-0-0): While High Velocity won the Bob Hope Stakes (G3), he needed his best effort to hold off Strongconstitution. The hard work, however, only earned him a 95 TimeformUS Speed Figure, adjusted down from a raw 103. Now he stretches out to two turns, and the waters get deeper with his stablemate Thousand Words entered. He looks like a late substitution for the barn, too, as Grade 1 winner Eight Rings was considered for this spot. Toss.
