The Grade 3, $300,000 Super Derby returns to dirt in 2018 after being moved to the turf course last year. Scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2 at Louisiana Downs, the Super Derby drew a field of nine 3-year-olds set to run 1 1/16 miles.

Heading up the field is multiple graded stakes-placed Lone Sailor, who drew post 3. Trained by Tom Amoss, Lone Sailor enters the Super Derby off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational behind Good Magic. The Majestic Warrior colt receives class relief after competing in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. Prior to the Haskell he was runner-up in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Jockey James Graham will be aboard.

Trainer Brad Cox will try to score his second Super Derby, winning last year with Mr. Misunderstood on turf. This year Cox enters High North off a third-place run in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby behind Mr Freeze. Already a two-time stakes winner, High North will try to make the grade in the Super Derby with guidance from Florent Geroux. They will break from 8.

Meeting High North for the third time in a row is Lionite, trained by Steve Asmussen. Lionite attempts to turn the tables from post 9, with jockey David Cabrera in the irons. The colt finished fourth in the West Virginia Derby and ran third in the Iowa Derby, won by High North. Lionite will also try to break through after earning his first stakes victory in the Prairie Mile.

Asmussen also entered allowance winner, Limitation.

Trainer Al Stall Jr. will go for his fourth Super Derby victory with the local horse, Autumn Warrior. Unbeaten in three starts, the son of Orb won the Lafayette Stakes against Louisiana-breds before rallying to win the Super Derby Prelude. Colby Hernandez has the mount and will break from the rail.

Rounding out the field is Charlie’s Schiller, McFeely, Bode’s Maker and G’s Turn.

The Super Derby runs as race 11 of 13 on the card. Post time is 5:05 p.m. CT.
