Mage, an expected starter in next weekend's Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby, led a quartet of Kentucky Derby 2023 prospects recording timed workouts on Friday.
The son of Good Magic out of the Big Brown mare Puca worked six furlongs in 1:16.6 at Gulfstream Park for trainer Gustavo Delgado. It was the only work at the distance.
His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Gulfstream Park. In his last start he placed fourth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Gulfstream Park on March 4.
On the eve of the Florida Derby post position draw, Mage was listed as a probable entrant.
Other Triple Crown-nominated 3-year-olds on the work tab Friday were:
Bo Cruz (Creative Cause) worked four furlongs in 48.6 seconds at Fair Grounds on Friday morning. It was the fifth fastest of 52 works at the distance. This is his first work since his last race. In his last start he won a maiden race going one mile, 70 yards on the main track at Fair Grounds on March 4 for trainer Al Stall Jr.
Bourbon Bash (City of Light) worked five furlongs in 1:02.2 at Oaklawn Park on Friday morning. It was the ninth fastest of 12 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Oaklawn Park. In his last start he placed fifth in the Rebel (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 25 for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
Older graded stakes winners
There were only two older graded stakes winners listed on the workout tab on Friday:
Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile), a Grade 1 winner (2022 Acorn), worked four furlongs in 49.2 seconds at Fair Grounds on Friday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 33 works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Fair Grounds. In her last start she placed thi3rd in the Test (G1) going 7 furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on Aug. 6 for Cox.
Set Piece (Dansili), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2022 Dinner Party, 2021 Wise Dan), worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds at Fair Grounds on Friday morning. It was the 19th fastest of 33 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Fair Grounds. In his last start he placed sixth in the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2) going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Del Mar on Nov. 26 for Cox.
