Leading Santa Anita Park jockey Rosario moving tack East

While Santa Anita Park officials haven’t indicated when racing may resume in Arcadia, Calif., leading jockey Joel Rosario’s camp isn’t waiting around.

Rosario’s agent, Ron Anderson, announced Wednesday that his rider will move to Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday to ride Todd Pletcher-trained Outshine in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2), then continue on at Gulfstream Park until Keeneland opens its spring meet in April.

Anderson is operating on the assumption that racing will not return to Santa Anita next weekend.

“That gets us out of here,” he said.

In a well-publicized move, Santa Anita already called off races scheduled for Friday through Sunday while the main dirt track is further examined following a rash of catastrophic injuries to horses.

Rosario, 34, will make one other important change to his schedule to ride Game Winner, the reigning 2-year-old champ and top Kentucky Derby prospect, should he run in the March 16 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park, Anderson said. Game Winner was originally set to make his season debut in Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes (G2).

Rosario, who relocated to California for Santa Anita’s current meet, is No. 1 among all riders with 51 wins from his 207 starts. His winning percentage dwarfs all but that of Flavien Prat, who’s second with 46 victories from 176 mounts.
