Lady of Fifty Returns to Hollywood for Everett

Lady Of Fifty, an easy winner of the Grade II Bayakoa Handicap in her only race over Cushion Track, will return to Betfair Hollywood Park Saturday for the $150,000 Marjorie L. Everett Handicap.

A Grade II for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles, the Everett is part of a stakes doubleheader that also includes the $100,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes, a one mile turf affair for older fillies and mares bred or sired in California. The Everett is the 10th of 11 races while the Fran’s Valentine is the fifth.

In conjunction with the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes, Betfair Hollywood Park will have an early post time of 11 a.m. Saturday. Track gates open at 8 a.m. The first simulcast from Pimlico goes at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Scheduled post time for the Preakness is 3:18 p.m. PDT, so it will be shown locally between the eighth and ninth races.

Owned by George Todaro and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Lady of Fifty won the Bayakoa by 3 ¼ lengths last Dec. 8 in her final start as a 3-year-old.

Fourth and third in a pair of Grade II races – the La Canada and Santa Maria – over conventional dirt at Santa Anita earlier in the year, Lady of Fifty will be seeking her seventh lifetime win Saturday. The gray daughter of After Market and the Maria’s Mon mare K.D.’s Shady Lady has banked $353,000 in 13 starts.

Hollendorfer will also send out Sister Kate, who has won two in a row for owner-breeder Mary Caldwell, and Lady Aspen in search of his first Everett – which was called the Milady Handicap prior to 2012 - victory.

A full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Brother Derek, the 5-year-old Benchmark mare won an optional claimer Feb. 23 at Golden Gate Fields before shipping to Southern California to win the restricted Santa Lucia Stakes April 14 at Santa Anita.

Out of the Siyah Kalem mare Miss Soft Sell, Sister Kate has won five of 14 and earned $206,984. She was third behind Warren’s Jitterbug and Going for a Spin in the 2012 B. Thoughtful Stakes in her only previous start at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Lady Aspen will be making her first appearance here since she finished sixth of eight in a $56,050 allowance last July 1.

A 5-year-old Grand Reward mare out of the Woodman mare Candace in Aspen, Lady Aspen has won five of 20. Owned by PRO Thoroughbred Enterprises, the Kentucky bred has earned $177,106.

Trainer John Sadler entered a pair – More Chocolate and I Dazzle.

Owned by Michael Talla, More Chocolate returns to California after finishing fifth in the Grade II La Troienne May 3 at Churchill Downs.

A 4-year-old Malibu Moon filly out of the Night Shift mare Little Treasure, More Chocolate has three wins in 10 starts and a bankroll of $252,642. Her lone graded victory came in the Grade II La Canada Stakes Jan. 20 at Santa Anita. She has yet to compete over Cushion Track.

I Dazzle will be making her synthetic debut after winning the American Beauty Stakes April 7 over the Santa Anita turf in her first start for Sadler.

A 5-year-old daughter of Hold That Tiger and the Carson City mare Miss Cheers, I Dazzle has won four of 16 and banked $178,837. She is owned by Katie Jones and Peter Peluso.

Like Hollendorfer, Hall of Famer Bob Baffert will also be seeking his first win in this event when he starts Maker Or Breaker.

A 4-year-old Empire Maker filly out of the Flying Chevron mare Shameful, Maker Or Breaker has won three of five for owner-breeders Patti and Hal Earnhardt III. The Everett will be the initial race at Betfair Hollywood Park for the dark bay, fourth as the 7-10 favorite in the Santa Lucia.

Open Water, who has earned both of her wins over Turfway Park’s Polytrack, will make her first appearance since finishing sixth in the La Canada.

Trained by Eric Guillot for Southern Equine Stable LLC, Mike Smith and Whispering Oaks Farm LLC, the 4-year-old Include filly out of the A.P. Indy mare Biscayne Bay has started 13 times and earned $180,750. She finished second behind Lady of Fifty in the Bayakoa in her most recent race at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Hollendorfer, who has won the Fran’s Valentine two of the last three years with U R All That I Am (2010) and Halo Dolly (2012), will be well represented Saturday by Top Kisser.

A 4-year-old Old Topper filly out of the Cherokee Run mare Cherokee Kiss, Top Kisser has won three in a row for owner-breeder Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC.

After finishing second in the first two starts of her career, Top Kisser defeated maidens by 1 ½ lengths Feb. 18 at Santa Anita, then won twice more – March 23 and April 11 – before the Arcadia track’s Winter/Spring meet concluded. The most recent of those wins was achieved against open company. Top Kisser has earned $133,840 in her five races.

Butterfly Beach, who won all three of her starts on turf as a 3-year-old, returns after a lengthy layoff with a new trainer – Hall of Famer Richard Mandella – in the Fran’s Valentine.

Owned by Ran Jan Racing, Inc., Butterfly Beach, who earned her maiden win by 5 ½ lengths in her grass debut June 16, 2011 at Betfair Hollywood Park, hasn’t been seen since winning an optional claimer against open company by a head Aug. 21, 2011 at Del Mar.

A 5-year-old daughter of Good Journey out of the Bertrando mare Half Moon Bay, Butterfly Beach is 3-for-4 with earnings of $122,700.

Winless since taking the Fleet Treat Stakes July 30, 2011 at Del Mar, Sugarinthemorning has won five of 21 and earned $520,184.

Unusual Hottie will try more ground after winning an optional claimer against open company in her first of 2013 for new trainer Jeff Mullins.

Owned by Seyyed Nilforushan, the 4-year-old Unusual Heat filly out of the Ski Champ mare Branca Como Neve has won five of 12 and earned $229,498. She hasn’t been worse than third in four races over the Betfair Hollywood Park turf, winning twice.
