Lady Apple started her 4-year-old season Sunday with a dramatic win over an accomplished field in the Grade 3, $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic.

The field of six featured three Grade 1 winners in Out for a Spin, Serengeti Empress and Street Band, Grade 2 heroine Mylady Curlin and Lady Apple, herself a three-time Grade 3 champ in 2019.

Serengeti Empress, the reigning Kentucky Oaks winner, went off a 3-5 favorite and broke to the front, per her style. The Tom Amoss-trained Alternation filly set fractions of :23.4 and :47.31 in the 1 1/16-mile trip around Sam Houston’s main track.

Lady Apple, Mylady Curlin and Street Band moved up to challenge Serengeti Empress as the field hit the stretch. That quartet went four-wide for the final furlong, with Lady Apple emerging on the rail for jockey Ricardo Santana Jr.

The 8-1 fourth betting choice, Lady Apple crossed in 1:44.19 and returned $18.40. Serengeti Empress stayed up for second, with Street Band edging Mylady Curlin for third.

Sunday marked trainer Steve Asmussen’s second straight Houston Ladies Classic victory. Last January, he saddled Midnight Bisou to a victory in the race, which proved a springboard for a 2019 Champion Older Dirt Female campaign.

Phoenix Thoroughbred III and KatieRich Stables own the Kentucky-bred Lady Apple, who now sports a 12:6-2-1 ledger. During her 3-year-old season, the filly won the Fantasy Stakes (G3), Iowa Oaks (G3) and Remington Park Oaks (G3) and ran third in the Kentucky Oaks.
