The Grade 3, $200,000 Indiana Oaks drew a full and competitive field of 11 sophomore fillies on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.
Headlined by graded stakes winner Shedaresthedevil, the tenth race at Indiana Grand on Wednesday (7:10 p.m. EDT post time) will be contested on the main track at 1 1/16 miles.
Points for the 2020 Kentucky Oaks prep schedule series leaderboard will be awarded with 20 points going to the winner and second through fourth place receiving points on a sliding scale of 8-4-2.
Shedaresthedevil, trained by Brad Cox for Flurry Racing Stables, Qatar Racing Limited and Big Aut Farms has accumulated the most points in the prep series thus far among Indiana Oaks runners with 70 points.
Tempers Rising, trained by Dallas Stewart is currently ranked 13th with 47 points. Impeccable Style (four points), Bayerness (four), and Alandra (two) have earned points but are currently on the outside looking in for a Kentucky Oaks starting gate.
Trainer Steve Asmussen’s Fire Coral drew the rail. She finished fifth, beaten by 19½ lengths in her latest effort, an allowance race at Churchill Downs won by Shedaresthedevil last month.
Kenny McPeek-trained Impeccable Style finished second in an allowance race at Churchill Downs last month in her most-recent start. She finished one place ahead of fellow Indiana Oaks entry Aurelia Garland, trained by Rodolphe Brisset.
Miss T Too, trained by Bill Mott looks to be the early pacesetter in the race which features few “need the lead” types, although she may be one of those. Miss T Too, Shedaresthedevil, Fire Coral and Shug McGaughey’s Alandra have won at least one career race in gate-to-wire fashion.
Trainer Cherie DeVaux sends out Bayerness, who won twice in two starts as a 2-year-old, but is 0-for-2 as a sophomore.
Spartanka and Gibberish are each coming into the Indiana Oaks off victories in their most-recent efforts. Mike Maker’s Spartanka won an allowance race over a sloppy Gulfstream Park main track in May, while Saffie Joseph Jr.’s Gibberish broke her maiden over that same track on the same day in a maiden special weight race.
But it is Shedaresthedevil who is the class of the field. She has danced many of the biggest sophomore filly dances this year, finishing third behind division leaders Swiss Skydiver and Venetian Harbor in the Oaklawn Park Fantasy Stakes (G3) in May following her victory in Oaklawn’s Honeybee (G3) in March.
In February, Shedaresthedevil finished second, beaten by ¾ of a length to Bonny South, another top-tier sophomore filly who has been sidelined since her victory in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) in late March.
