Saturday is shaping up to be a beautiful day for the 147th Kentucky Derby.
The National Weather Service predicts a sunny day in Louisville with a high of 69 degrees.
Ahead of the Derby, showers are expected to move in on Wednesday and linger until Friday morning. High temperatures are forecast in the 70s on Wednesday and Thursday and 65 on Friday.
The weather in Louisville is famously variable on the first Saturday in May.
The warmest Derby was in 1959, when the thermometer hit 94 degrees. The coldest high temperature was 47 degrees in 1935 and 1957 – and that chilly day in 1957 was accompanied by north winds of 20 to 25 miles an hour.
You might well recall the wettest Kentucky Derby on record. That was in 2018, when 3.15 inches fell for the day — and 2.85 of that between 1 and 7 p.m.
