As has been the case for all years of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, the option for all other 3-year-olds colts and geldings was the runaway favorite on the morning line at 6-5 odds, and moved to 7-5 by 11:40 a.m. on Friday. That option had taken in $19,811 in wagers before betting reopened at noon on Friday.
If the current tote board holds, the option will be the first pool favorite for the 23rd consecutive year.
Pool 1 of the KDFW opened at noon Thursday and as of 11:50 p.m. the win handle was at $56,446. Last year’s pool 1 win total for all four days of wagering was $186,470.
With the exacta pool handle sitting at $11,385, the total handle was $67,831 after one day. Last year’s total handle closed at $258,389 after all four days of wagering.
Life Is Good, the Bob Baffert-trained colt who turned in an impressive debut win at Del Mar on Sunday, was the favored non-field option in the pool. The colt sat at 4-1 odds as of 11:40 a.m. Friday after opening at 15-1 and took in $8,106 through the first day.
Baffert has trained two of the three Derby winners who have appeared in the first future pool, in Authentic (2020) and American Pharoah (2015). The other winner who came out of the first pool was Nyquist (2016), trained by Doug O’Neill.
Authentic, who was offered at 50-1 in the future wager, returned $103.60 for the Derby win.
Also being offered this year is the Kentucky Derby Sires Future Wager, which closed Thursday with a handle sitting at $7,836 for the win and $2,958 for the exacta, for a total handle of $10,794 after one day.
The all other sires option is the second choice in this year’s pool, which closes Sunday, sitting at 6-1 odds, down from 4-1 on the morning line, and has taken in $907 as of 10:20 a.m. on Friday.
That option was overtaken as the favorite by Into Mischief, who sired 2020 Derby winner Authentic. Into Mischief would become the first sire to ever have two Derby winners in a row.
The closest a sire has ever come to accomplishing such a feat was The Finn, who sired Zev (1923 and Flying Ebony (1925), as well as Elusive Nature, father to Affirmed (1978) and Genuine Risk (1980.)
Into Mischief closed at 17-1 in last year’s future sire wager, returning $36.20 for the win.
Into Mischief had taken in $1,211 in wagers through 10:20 a.m. on Friday.
The KDFW and KDSFW both close on Sunday at 6 p.m.
The 2021 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 1 at Churchill Downs.
