Whether your current 2018 Kentucky Derby pick is already multiple stakes winner or an up-and-comer in the allowance ranks, the odds offered through race books won't reflect belief in victory on the first Saturday in May -- but rather money coming in on that horse.
Horse Racing Nation on Tuesday listed fair odds for 100 Derby hopefuls based on chance of winning as of now. Compiled by HRN co-founder Mark Midland, who in 1999 created Churchill's Kentucky Derby Future Wager, the odds feature likely 2-year-old champion Bolt d'Oro as a 12-1 shot and range up to Diamond King, a December stakes winner, at 400-1.
Keep our odds in mind when, for instance, placing your bet through the Wynn Las Vegas or in the upcoming Derby Future Wager Pool 2 set for Feb. 9-11.
In the era of Derby points races -- since the 2013 running -- it's normal for the eventual winners like California Chrome, American Pharoah and Nyquist to emerge early. But in 2013, Orb didn't turn heads until a Jan. 26 allowance win, while last year, Always Dreaming waited until Jan. 25 to break his maiden.
Bookmark the HRN odds, as we'll be watching for new names and updating odds up until the first Saturday in May.
