Indiana Downs Play of the Day!

Indiana Downs 615 X 400

Indiana Downs is heating up with the start of turf racing, which began this past Saturday. Grass racing in the Hoosier State gives bettors a great opportunity to cash in on full fields and extremely salty betting races.

If you’ve been reading this blog of late, then your “Hoosier State of Mind” has been on cashing tickets! Our first “Play of the Day,” Toe Tapping Teddy crushed the field to win at odds of 3-1. Our $10.00 Win, Place, Show bet returned a total of $84.00 on a $30.00 investment.

This blog also profiled and selected Orb as your 2013 Kentucky Derby winner and predicted his possible Triple Crown victory.  (A little toot of the horn (Toot Toot) for this Hoosier Handicapper.)

What does Hoosier State of Mind have in store for you next? Well an Indiana Downs play of course!

The first race on tomorrow’s card is a highly contested Maiden Special Weight on the turf for 3, 4, and 5 year old colts and geldings at the 1 mile distance.  At first glance this race might be confused with one of the Kentucky Derby undercard races with Turf Sprint Handicap winning jockey Leandro Goncalves coming in to ride #1 Golden Story. Kentucky Derby participants Victor Lebron (Frac Daddy) and Jon Court (Will Take Charge) also invade the Hoosier State for this competitive turf affair.

The morning line 5/2 favorite is #7 Sir Squire for the connections of trainer John Dyer and jockey Roberto Morales. Sir Squire has been competing in the maiden special ranks. He’s coming off a disappointing 8th place finish at Keeneland on the grass.  The Squire made his debut at Indiana Downs last year in a 5 furlong turf sprint where he finished 3rd. Sir Squire is a total play against in my opinion. He’s consistently in the high 50’s in terms of beyer speed figures and that’s just not good enough to win this race.

#8 Giacoslew is the second choice on the line at 7/2 for the trainer/jockey combo of Marcos Medrano and Jon Court. The son of Giacomo finished 2nd in a $32,000 Maiden Claimer at Tampa Bay Downs in his last race. He needs to improve to compete in this talented field.

#1 Golden Story is 10-1 on the morning line for last year’s leading jockey Leandro Goncalves. He’s conditioned by trainer William Hickey. Golden Story is a son of one of the nation’s leading sires, Medaglia d’Oro. On the dam side you see major turf breeding with his dam sire being Sheihk Albadou. Golden Story is a major contender and a strong play if you get 10-1 odds. He attracts former leading jock Leandro Goncalves in from Churchill Downs and might be tough to beat but he draws the rail and faces a strong field for his debut.

#10 Kruthen is 5-1 on the morning line for trainer "George "Rusty"  Arnold and jockey Victor Lebron. The son of Indian Charlie is making his second start of the year and is coming in off an impressive third place finish. The Green Latern Stables homebred closed in a 6 furlong sprint to be narrowly defeated by 3/4th’s of a length in a $50,000 Maiden Claimer at Keeneland.

Kruthen should love the stretch back out in distance but the main key to this gelding is first time turf! The dam of Kruthen is the Theatrical Mare, Leaning Tower. Leaning Tower produced the multiple graded stakes winning gelding Karelian. Karelian won the 2010, grade 1 Makers Mark Mile at Keeneland. In the last start of his career Karelian finished second in the 2010, grade I Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park. Leaning Tower also produced the graded stakes placed gelding Colgans Chip. Colgans Chip has won 4 races in his career 3 of them being on the turf and over $230,000 in earnings. The highlight of Colgans Chip's career was a 2nd place finish in the 2010, grade II Oak Tree Mile at Santa Anita.

#10 Kruthen is out of a major turf producing dam and he's a half to a grade I winner. We will be making him our “play of the day.” Our bet will be a $20.00 Win/Place wager on this Indian Charlie gelding.

(Current Bankroll total $84.00.) (54.00 profit.)
