Hot Rod Charlie returned to work Saturday for the first time since his second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes, putting in a four-furlong move in 48.2 seconds at Santa Anita. The effort was 10th fastest of of 66 works at the distance.

“He looked great, galloped out strong and Flavien (Prat) was very happy,” trainer Doug O’Neill said in a Santa Anita press release. O'Neill had not made a final decision on Hot Rod Charlie's immediate future.

“The (Breeders’ Cup) Classic is on the table,” O’ Neill said in the Los Angeles Times racing newsletter on Saturday. “The Haskell is on the table, the Travers is on the table and the Penn Derby. There are a lot of races on the table. We’re going to let him decide through his exercising and appetite to tell us when he’s ready.”
