Lady Speightspeare improved to 4-for-4 on Saturday with a four-length score in Woodbine’s Grade 2, $175,000 (about U.S. $139,000) Bessarabian Stakes.

Under jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, Lady Speightspeare vied for the early lead in a field of eight fillies and mares going seven furlongs over an all-weather track. She then took back to follow leader Our Secret Agent through fractions of 23.47 and 45.65 through the first half-mile.

Lady Speightspeare moved up to bid for the front coming through the late turn. She took the lead into the stretch, opened up at the eighth pole and maintained a clear margin.

The 3-year-old Speightstown filly covered seven furlongs in 1:21.03, paying $12.90 at 5-1 odds. Finishing second and third were 3-2 favorite Our Secret Agent and La Libertee, respectively.

Roger Attfield trains Lady Speightspeare for owner-breeder Charles Fipke. The filly has won all four career starts, all at Woodbine, including graded scores in the 2020 Natalma Stakes (G1) and now the Bessarabian.

Skygaze cruises for Casse in Maple Leaf (G3)

Trainer Mark Casse earned his 18th graded stakes win of 2021 on Saturday thanks to filly Skygaze.

The 4-year-old daughter of American Pharoah cruised to a 4½-length win at Woodbine in the Grade 3, $150,000 (about U.S. $120,000) Maple Leaf Stakes. She covered 1¼ miles over the all-weather track in 2:03.65 under jockey Patrick Husbands, returning $8.30 as a 3-1 favorite.

Skygaze settled third early on in a field of 10 fillies and mares. Up front, Broadway Lady went through the first six furlongs in fractions of 24.93, 50.57, and 1:15.23.

Coming through the far turn, Skygaze closed two-wide, took the lead into the stretch, and widened her lead under a hand ride. Sister Otoole settled for runner-up honors, with Merveilleux in third.

Skygaze improved to 13: 6-1-3 for Casse and owner Tracy Farmer. She made the grade Saturday, with her only other stakes score coming two months ago at Woodbine in the Belle Mahone Stakes.
