Got Stormy put the finishing touches on a sparkling 4-year-old campaign Sunday while putting herself under further consideration for an Eclipse Award when rallying from mid-pack to take the Grade 1, $300,000 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar.

The Mark Casse trainee went off as a 7-5 favorite and settled sixth of 11 in the one-mile turf feature for fillies and mares. Painting Corners set the early pace, followed by Storm the Hill and Giza Goddess.

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione brought Got Stormy up along the outside through the far turn. She put away Juliet Foxtrot in the stretch, then had enough to finish one length ahead of late-charging Daddy Is a Legend for a win that paid $4.80.

Juliet Foxtrot, a Brad Cox trainee, crossed third behind the George Weaver-conditioned Daddy Is a Legend.

Got Stormy’s victory was her fourth out of eight starts during her 2019 season. The Kentucky-bred Get Stormy filly now has two Grade 1 wins to her name, having also claimed the Fourstardave Handicap on Aug. 10 at Saratoga in mixed company.

"I told Mark in the paddock: ‘I think this race might set up just like the Fourstardave (where she came from well back to win easily),'" Gaffalione said. "'And if it does, we’ll win.’

"Sure enough, it was exactly like that race. Perfect. She just sat back there nice and relaxed and then when it came time she was gone.”

Gary Barber campaigns Got Stormy, whose recent results also include runner-up efforts Sept. 14 in the Woodbine Mile (G1) and Nov. 2 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park.

“She’s amazing," said Casse, whose filly has a primary Eclipse rival Uni, who beat the boys in the Breeders' Cup Mile. "Put her on a van, put her on a plane, she just goes wherever and runs. We kept hearing that she’d only won one Grade 1, so we had to fix that.

"She’s been through a lot in the last month but she just keeps fighting. You don’t get a lot like her.  She’ll definitely stay in training next year.”

With Got Stormy’s win, Casse has now collected 15 graded stakes victories in 2019, including five in Grade 1 company. He, Barber and Gaffalione teamed up this year for Grade 1 wins in the Matriarch, Fourstardave and the Preakness Stakes (War of Will).
