Golden Gate Fields in the San Francisco Bay Area cancelled its Friday race slate due to wildfires in the area impacting air quality. The cancellation is the second this year due to the extensive fires in California.

“Very much the same situation as what happened a few weeks ago,” Golden Gate track announcer Matt Dinerman said in a social media post. “Thinking about and hoping for the best for all who are close to the fires who are severely effected.”

Golden Gate’s previous cancellation came the weekend of Sept. 11-13 with racing returning on Sept. 17. Previously, the track had to cancel races in 2018 for the same reasons.

A nine-race card was scheduled for Friday, headlined by a $50,000 allowance claiming race. The track did not announce any future cancellations, nor did it explicitly announce that Saturday’s nine-race slate would be run as scheduled.

“We will be monitoring the situation on a daily basis,” the track said in a social media post.
