While Global Campaign’s last breeze clocked a bullet over Saratoga’s Oklahoma training track, “We didn’t necessarily think it was a good work,” said Hunter Rankin, president of Sagamore Farm. Because of that, paired with a third in last month's Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), connections have decided to bypass the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 24.

“He’s doing fine, but I don’t think he really showed himself like we thought he would in the Jim Dandy,” Rankin said.

A Stanley Hough-trained son of Curlin who has won three of five starts, Global Campaign evidenced his talent when defeating the eventual Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston two starts back in the May 11 Peter Pan (G3). But he has also dealt with foot issues throughout his 3-year-old campaign — shedding his frog, a quarter crack and a grabbed quarter.

“He’s not perfect right now,” Rankin said. “I just don’t think he’s 100% comfortable. It’s not the foot, but it could be a result of protecting that foot. It’s nothing serious — we’ve gone over him — but he may need some time. Whether it’s on the racetrack or off, we’re not going to make that call yet.

“He’s going to be a really good 4-year-old. We don’t want to blow that by going somewhere he doesn’t really need to go right now.”

Meanwhile, another Sagamore Farm runner, Scars Are Cool, could be working his way into the Travers picture. The Florida-bred son of Malibu Moon, also conditioned by Hough, broke his maiden July 21 going nine furlongs at Saratoga.

“There’s a chance we’d take a shot,” Rankin said of the $1.25 million Mid-Summer Derby.

Kevin Plank, the Under Armour CEO acquired Sagamore Farm in 2007, will be consulted on the pending decision.

“Obviously it’s a huge step up for that horse, but we’ve thought a lot of him all along,” Rankin said. “You don’t have a horse that likes Saratoga, that ran so well over the racetrack, that looks like he wants to go a mile and a quarter and is doing well at this time — you don’t have those chances often. We’re going to look at it, and I would say it’s 50-50.”

If not the Travers, Scars Are Cool will point to an Aug. 25 allowance race at Saratoga going 1 1/8 miles.
